When he is not busy with his work as a career coach in the Cayman Islands, Godfrey Dawkins likes to go out hiking with his wife. Not only is this great exercise, but it allows the couple to explore areas they would otherwise not get to see during their daily lives. There are a number of things that novice hikers need to keep in mind before they head out, including all of the following.

Start Small

While it may be tempting to head out on the most challenging hikes that you can find right from the start, it is important that you start small so you get an understanding of what hiking entails and what your current limitations are. Trying to take on harder walks too early could result in a number of issues, such as intense fatigue or getting lost.

Plan Your Route

Speaking of getting lost, it is important that you take every precaution possible to ensure you stay on track and don’t end up wandering too far from your trail. Use a map of the area you plan to hike in to mark out both your trail and any important landmarks. This will be able to help you get back on track should you get lost.

Get Good Boots

Godfrey Dawkins notes that hiking becomes very uncomfortable if your boots are not very good. You should invest in a pair that offers comfort, while also being able to withstand the rigors of walking on difficult terrain. As a further tip, make sure you wear your boots in before going on your first hike.
